After over a year of waiting for Disney's newest attraction to open, annual pass holders got a special invitation to view the Toy Story themed adventure.

Disneyland Annual Pass Holders got a special treat when the long-awaited "Toy Story Mania!" attraction was opened for an invitation-only sneak preview. After months of being “teased” with artist renderings, employee whispers and YouTube videos, SoCal locals got the opportunity to experience the thrills first-hand.

The wait was nothing to scoff at, over two hours at some points, but after waiting months for a peek, pass holders were more than willing to stand in line. While there, they were entertained by a large animatronic of the trilogy’s Mr. Potato Head character with an extra surprise – a small camera in the character’s body “sees” the visitors and, therefore, can talk directly to them! Definitely a special experience for SoCal-ers small enough to believe in the magic!

First Look at Toy Story Mania

Once riders arrived at the loading dock – with provided 3-D glasses in hand – they were seated in cars that looked more like enclosed park benches with the nostalgia of an old board walk. Riders were invited to seat two-to-a-side on the dual-sided cars connected with a chassis system that allowed the cars to twist and spin throughout the experience -- a feature that was audibly enjoyed by all.

Each car featured a “gun” of sorts which riders used to play a variety of games when their cars stopped at different intervals in front of large 3-D screens for interactive game play. With games featuring characters from the trilogy like Bo Peep, Ham, and Buzz Lightyear, the laughter was non-stop.

Toy Story Mania and Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters

The enjoyment of an attraction where riders are actually invited to participate held a familiar resemblance to Buzz’s other gig across Main Street U.S.A. -- "Astroblasters." Pass holders throughout the day commented on the similar excitement felt when the Buzz Lightyear attraction was opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. While the games are definitely “Disney 2.0,” the overall feel is still a vintage ‘day at the beach.’ The irony of the nostalgic look on the new-era-film’s main attraction wasn’t lost on riders, in fact, it was fully appreciated – “Disney is finally paying homage to the classics of our generation.”

Enjoy the Ride with Disneyland Discount Tickets

Toy Story Mania is now open to everyone who visits Disney's California Adventure Park, and, during the months of January through May, its 2fer time! For SoCal residents (or those who know any...), you can pay for a single day, single park pass and get into the other park on another day, for free. Its a wonderufl way to experience this, and all the wonderful Disney Resort attractions!

Love this ride! Whenever I come out to visit my parents, we take advantage of our annual passes and make a couple visits to Disney....the most recent ones have involved multiple trips through the Toy Story line as Mom and I battle over championship rights!

Overall, I think Disney is figuring out this technology and type of attraction is working well for them. Hong Kong and Tokyo both feature Astroblasters, and they also have interactive shows where you "talk" with a character. HK has a Stitch show and Tokyo has a Crush version. It's impressive to see the interaction and authentic feel of the voices and animation in the respective shows. With some of the updates released at the D23 Expo last fall, I see some exciting things in store for Disney Theme Parks.
